Position your greenhouse

How to Choose the Best Greenhouse Position for Year-Round Growing

Choosing the optimal location for your Winter Gardenz greenhouse is one of the most important steps for successful growing. A well-positioned greenhouse maximises sunlight, improves drainage, and protects your crops from harsh weather—boosting productivity and plant health all year long.

🌞 Sunlight Exposure

Sunlight is essential for plant growth, especially during short winter days. Position your greenhouse to receive maximum light by avoiding shade from buildings, fences, or overhanging trees. In New Zealand, north-facing slopes are ideal. This also helps keep your gutter system clear of debris and leaves.

🌧️ Slope and Drainage

Choose a level site with good drainage to prevent water pooling and simplify construction. Avoid low-lying areas where water may collect or run toward your home.

🚪 Easy Access

Leave at least 1 metre of clearance around all sides of your greenhouse. This allows for easy maintenance, cleaning, and access to vents, doors, and water systems.

💧 Water Supply

Ensure your greenhouse is close to a hose or water source—even if you plan to use an irrigation system. For sustainable watering, connect your greenhouse gutters to a rainwater tank or water butt.

💨 Wind Protection

Shield your greenhouse from prevailing winds to maintain stable temperatures during spring and autumn. If your site is exposed, consider installing a windbreak using posts and trellis or wind cloth. Bonus: it doubles as a climbing frame for beans or peas!

🔌 Power Access

If you plan to use heating, lighting, or automated ventilation, check the availability of power and plan how to safely run services to your greenhouse.
